LMSD Redistricting - A Win-Win Option for All

So, is there truly a win-win with this whole redistricting mess? Actually, I beleive there is and one of the key flaws of the process when it began was that there was a presumption that there was not.

It is absolutely possible to have choice for all of the affected communities (Ardmore, Narberth, Penn Wynne, Wynnewood, Penn Valley, Bala, Cynwyd and Merion) AND have 1100 students/high school. As a bonus, we'd have more students coming out of the District with skills that are highly competitive, applicable to either further study or employment (or both) and ensures that ALL of our students get an outstanding education, regardless of their academic abilities or aspirations beyond high school.

Politically Motivated Hatchet Job or Something To Be Considered?

Curiouser and curiouser....

You know, it's always going to make us sit up and notice when the lead story in the Sunday Inquirer mentions the magic kingdom - i.e. Lower Merion and especially Gladwyne.

I don't know what to think, other than wonder of the murkiness of Pennsylvania politics....the subject of this one article (and related to other two I suppose) lives in the Vatican City State locals have nicknamed Versailles. (Well, not all because some find it politically expedient to be suck ups, right?)

But is this person being targeted because they are rich, because they are Republican, or because there is something wrong? Or all of the above?

If he was getting on a bus to see Inauguration Day, would we even be thinking about this? Is this all just politically convenient? Or is there more?

One point of interest? Dude got his start in Delco, and Delco Tom Paine wrote about this YEARS ago...and does this make the primary season of 2008 make more sense in a weird way?

Here are the links to the articles and to what the Magic 8 ball known as Delco Tom Paine said way back in 2005:

Rudolf Latest Victim of Economy

Bad news from up north. Rudolf, the cheeriest reindeer of all has falled victim to Caribou Barbie. In a press release issued from Santa's Stable at the North Pole, Santa and Mrs. Claus said in part:

"We are saddened that with all the tragic news from Governor Palin's own dysfunctional family, that she would see to ruin the Christmas of millions of children worldwide by the thoughtless hunting of Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer, who was picked off sniper style as he was finishing a little Christmas shopping over the weekend."

Maybe we really SHOULD Free Levi

Honestly, Sarah Palin, the nobody from nowhere special is the gift that keeps on giving.

During the campaign there was an underground T-Shirt movement. The shirts said "Free Levi" . The shirts referred to the wondering if Lvi was being pushed into a shotgun wedding for knocking up one of Palin's progeny - Bristol.

So anyway, Levi's mommy got popped for hilbilly heroin - yes - Levi's momma was arrested on some drug charges. Wow, think of what had happened had the election gone the other way? We would have had our first first felon, huh?

Thoughts for The Day

Often residents of small neighborhoods and small business owners in business districts feel like victims of the development and redevelopment process as opposed to felling like partners.

Often taxpayers and residents feel victimized by the municipal budget process as opposed to feeling like they have a say in their own taxpayer destiny

It is no longer business as usual in this country as a whole as far as the economy goes, so local governments in more than one municipality need to wake up and smell the coffee.

Are local municipalities penny-wise and pound-foolish? Or a penny earned is four dollars spent?

Budget Bickering on The Main Line

Every municipality on the Main Line is dickering over the bottom line and taxes. The other night in Lower Merion, what struck me were the different approaches of citizens and commissioners alike.

To be succinct, being combative is getting us nowhere fast and it's embarassing. I do not know what to think, other then when Bob Foulk from River Road got up to speak he made an EXCELLENT point with stating that we, as a community, and they as government, have to seperate NEED from WANT. Things that are not a NEED right now are not bad, but maybe they have to wait - like those trails, and even rebuilding the libraries right now? To me, they are a WANT not an immediate NEED. After all, what good will rebuilding libraries be if they lay off the staff to run them? And those trails? They won't run themselves - they will need maintenance, policing, etc - and all that can't be handled by volunteers alone.

And can we afford to lose the people who serve us every day in areas like public works and the police department? Can we afford to have our volunteer firefighters go wanting? NO. That is a question of safety - theirs and ours.

There was another woman who hit a chord with me. I don't know her name, but she has shortish hair and used to live in Massachusetts, and I think she was involved in local government wherever it was she lived prior to coming here. She was also full of common sense. (Of course Dave O'Connell from LMCRB is always full of common sense too but do they listen?)

Ken Davis in Inquirer: Wahhh, Wahhh, Wahhh, Blah, Blah, Blah?

Wahh, Wahh, Wahh. Blah, blah, blah. I am tired of post-mortems on the election from those who used to be local politicians and party heads.

I am not going to restate the obvious of why the overwhelming majority of voters in the entire country - Republican, Democrats, Independents, etc. voted the way they did this past November.

The voters in this country voted the way they did so succintly as a vote of "no confidence" of the direction this country is headed economically and politically.

Mr. Ken Davis, former head of the GOP in Montgomery County and former Lower Merion Township Commissioner states his case in a 12/11/2008 Philadelphia Inquirer editorial.

I pity him actually because this old political lion is sadly out of touch. He doesn't get it. Not my job to educate him, but he never seems to get anything does he? Doesn't he GET that the same old same old isn't working? If he wants the GOP to get back their "big tent", well then he needs to stop knocking out their tent poles! Careful Mr. Davis, you arrogance might just be showing again, you hear? Mind you I am not in your demographic - a "conservative white Republican man over 55", but that is part of your perspective and acceptance problem isn't it? There are more in this country then "conservative white Republican man over 55", true? I also find it surprising that political strategy of the future is in an editorial? You want to "win" Mr. Davis? Listen to and possibly ACCEPT some of what you don't understand. Start there. Start with actually listening. We are not all made the same in any political party in this country, and why can't you understand that instead of continuing to fan the flames of divisiveness within your own political party that you claim to love so deeply?

Posted on Thu, Dec. 11, 2008
The GOP lost its 'big tent'
By Ken Davis
(managing director of Duane Morris Government Affairs)

If you are a conservative white Republican man over 55, congratulations are in order: Yours is the only voting bloc that supported John McCain.

Gerlach For Governor?

Well color me happy AND curious, as I discovered yesterday that Congressman Jim Gerlach is mulling a bid for Governor in 2010 - I heard it first on the blog of John Micek at The Morning Call here and then I read about SE PA committee leaders being skeptical? Typical. Now I did get a note today from the Congressman- so I have it STRAIGHT FROM the horse's mouth as they say that he is considering this and here is part of what he said:

Thanks for the note and kind comments Carla. I am giving this serious
consideration and we'll see where all of this goes.

The others mulling a run are Tom Corbett and Patrick Meehan, both who have also had public careers, but they are more showman like then Congressman Gerlach, who is definitely a worker bee. I think I would prefer a worker bee, wouldn't you?

I see him more next in the U.S. Senate, but as Governor, it might be nice, right? He's good to our district and is enough in the middle that he has cross party appeal. Plus people just like around here. I think that is a fair statement, although, I am sure some will say otherwise.

respect.

Respect. That is what we are supposed to have for those who govern us. Not mistrust, disdain, skepticism.

But how are we supposed to respect and show respect for those who govern us, when those who govern us do not seem to respect each other?

Watching the Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners these days is like watching a train wreck waiting to happen.

The party politics is NOT what I am speaking of, I am speaking of the way two commissioners are treated in particular.

Commissioner Jenny Brown and Commissioner Brian Gordon.

WAKE UP Lower Merion!

You know what, it's time to ask why any of those folks are around governing us and/or working for Lower Merion Taxpayers as Township Staff if they can't run a better meeting?

I used to wonder what magic the previous Board of Commissioners had that they could be so insulting to the public, discuss things like eminent domain and small groups of mean spirited individuals, yet seemingly get the meetings done?

Does the Lower Merion School District Need State Takeover?

Over the past few years the news has been full of stories about the Lower Merion Township School District - and one of the most constant ill winds are whispers and shouts of racism, along with fiscal mis-management, and is all that has been reported, wrong? And don't forget the dust up over where to put the buses as well? Has anyone done an accounting of wasted monies over the past 5 years?

I am not a parent, so I only know what the media covers....last evening's meeting was no exception. Jamison Uler at NBC10 did an excellent job of covering the parents in their quest for fairness in both the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts - he stuck out the whole meeting, apparently. He caught parents on film telling the LMSD they were out and out racists (something about pepper for soup), and questioning why the township was spending MILLIONS to promote walkable communities and kids who are mere scant blocks walking distance from a high school have to be bused miles away? They have a point - what is environmentally friendly about that?

NBC10: Main Line Fired Up Over Diverse Redistricting Plan

VIDEO!
Lower Merion residents came out in force Monday night adamantly opposing a plan to bus students who live within walking distance to their current school miles away in the name of diversity.

So is it time for the state to step in and take over the Lower Merion School District? They wayyyy overspent on the schools, the re-districting smacks again of racist undertones and unfair all around treatment, right?

Full Moon in Lower Merion is Wednesday November 19th, 2008

Wednesday November 19th has several very important items shoved into an unrealistic one night stand of a meeting schedule. Items of crucial, township altering, pocketbook altering importance. Are you all in Lower Merion OK with this?

Residents of Lower Merion, are you o.k. with these ridiculous meeting schedules? Are you? Are you among those who attended the Wednesday, November 12th, 2008 Board of Commissioners who expected things to run according to the published schedule? As in:

Library Committee 11/12/2008 6:30 PM
Economic Revitalization Committee - REVISED 11/12/2008 6:45 PM
Finance Committee 11/12/2008 6:50 PM
Building & Planning Committee 11/12/2008 7:00
Board of Commissioners Special Meeting 11/12/2008 8:00 PM

Cliff notes version: the schedule did NOT even come close. The meeting went until midnight or maybe later. I actually fell asleep watching it. And a lot of important stuff happened after all that.

After The Election Dust Has Settled, I Have My Say...

I have a favorite poem by Langston Hughes:

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly.

Hold Fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

What made me think of it? After the election dust settled...I remembered it.

I hit on it in my editorial this week in Main Line Life (and I am entitled to my opinion) :

The Tax Man Cometh...In Lower Merion

Every day brings news of a new business closing...for example, just this afternoon I saw a roving mobile billboard announcing Jack Kellmer Jewelers' demise...after 70 years they are going away - and that will leave a hole in Lower Merion as they have a business in Haverford on Lancaster Avenue.

So what do I see today that should give Lower Merion residents pause for thought? Another tax increase. Just another...you will be told it's "only $25". Define only if you are a single parent struggling to keep a roof over your head and pay your bills. Define only if you are a senior on a fixed budget coming to the realization that you won't be able to end your days in the municipality where you raised a family and lived your life because only $25 means a LOT given the cost of living, healthcare, etc.

Normally, I stay out of the budget nonsense, but in these economic times, to not take a peek at this issue is nonsense.

Student Housing Discussed at Radnor BOC?

Well tonight at the Radnor Board of Commissioners a corageous resident of Callanan Avenue in Rosemont (Garrett Hill, correct?) came forward to complain about 3 student residences on their street during public participation.

Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which houses --- they are listed on Villanova University's magic list of Off Campus by Municipality/Township :

http://www.villanova.edu/studentlife/assets/documents/dean/pdf/StudentApprovedHousing2007-08.pdf

And one of the houses can be found on Cabrini's Off Campus Student Housing list:

http://www.cabrini.edu/assets/cabrini/ResLife/Off-CampusHousing.pdf

And that would be 241 Callanan Ave. ,245 Callanan Ave., and 249 Callanan Ave., right???

Today I saw a huge billboard on wheels and wondered if it was a green truck driving it around? Then I saw it pull into the Exxon to increase their profits even more...

When I went to vote, I was in and out in a few minutes. I saw people bringing their children with them to vote as a family. I thought that was pretty cool, and I have fuzzy memories of my parents doing the same with me when I was a small child.

Ignore The Diatribe, Just Get Out and VOTE!

I have been pretty darn quiet this election season for me, well except for a column for Main Line Life I wrote in October called "Will we all survive until November 5?"

It has been a trying election season with lots of door knocking, nasty glossy advertisements from campaigns,robo-calls galore, massive chain e-mails, finger pointing, sign stealing, sticker elves, bumper sticker wars, and wondering if some politicians have PTS (political tourettes syndrome). The most fun I have had comes courtesy of Saturday Night Live and Tina Fey. When Tina decides to run for office, I will be first in line to volunteer.

I am going to hit DELETE for any and all political e-mails between now and tomorrow so that I can have a clear head to make an informed decision on each and every race. I am going to get beyond the war of words so I can hear my own voice, and decide what is best for ME.

I will be remembering the politicians who took the time to learn MY name and care about MY issues. Am I going to tell you whom I am voting for now? No, because it doesn't matter. What matters is I am going to get out and vote. And that is all that should matter to anyone at this point. Politicians should count themselves fortunate if they have not managed to turn OFF the entire electorate in what is the nastiest campaign season EVER.

This morning while walking the dogs, we watched helplessly in horror as my neighbor Jason, his small son, and dog almost beacame a traffic statistic because a man driving a Volvo wagon just couldn't be bothered to stop at (a) a STOP sign (b) yield to pedestrians crossing the street legally.

Will Someone Please Tell Ken Davis To Shut Up?

Why is Ken Davis So Mean? Why Can't Ken Davis Shut Up? Why does Ken Davis hate most of Gladwyne, especially River Road? I have friends down on the river whom I think are pretty darn cool. Let's face it Mr. Davis, isn't it true you not only hate bloggers and those who "opine" (nice big lawyerly word you used), you hate anyone that simply doesn't agree with what you decree is to be, right? So that would still make me selfish for disagreeing with you on eminent domain, correct? So that would make me selfish for liking the idea of trails, but being genuinely worried about the safety aspect of running part of a trail between the Surekill and Norfolk Southern Lines among other saftey issues that no one, NO ONE seems to be talking about?

What is it about aging political lions when they seem to resort to becoming ankle biters and embarrassing themselves? Well congrats former commissioner, now former Montco GOP head, you have formally crossed a line that is intolerable and unfair, as well as embarrassing yourself by sounding like a petty and peurile ousted dictator, didn't you?

The Jamie Cockayne Murder: Verdict and Message From Virgin Islands Public Information Officer

**UPDATE** A beautiful message from Jamie's mom. An excerpt will be posted, and we should abide by a mother's wishes to finally be able to find peace and grieve for her son:

Good morning Melody, As in the past, if called upon, I will speak out honestly regarding my feelings. I will not go back and revisit the issues I had with the police during the investigation. I believe that would be counter productive at this point. What is important is a guilty verdict, a life in prison sentence for Ward. Now we can only wait to see the length of incarceration Kamal and Boston receive for the brutal beating Jamie received, which led to his murder.

Communication is key in these situations and until the Justice Department hired their Public Relations Officer this past spring, communication did not exist....There were multitudes of local people that pleaded with us to fight until the end, to use any means to receive Justice for Jamie.

My thanks to Renee Gumbs-Carty and the jury for their time and efforts.

As to the prosecution and conviction rate, I will leave that to you to revisit. The last I read there have been more than 30 homicides in the VI in 2008. My fight is over, yours has just begun....This started with my son Jamie but during the past year and a half it became a fight we raged for all victims on St. John. I do hope the bad people will think twice from now on and realize that once in a great while, Justice will prevail.

I thank the witnesses and prosecution for their bravery and sense of citizenship.

Now please allow me to rest, Jeanie Cockayne

Amen to that.

Original parts of this particular post:
**UPDATE 10/12/08**: Another e-mail from the VI PD PIO:

Melody melody851@yahoo.com
dateSat, Oct 11, 2008 at 8:54 PM
subjectRe: James "Jamie" Cockayne
hide details 8:54 PM (14 hours ago) Reply

Thank you, if you would correct the young lady's name I would appreciate it. I should have looked it up. I meant no disrespect by my spelling of the name. The young lady is still missing and her loved ones still have hope. I Thank you in advance if you would assist me with this.

As for speaking out, it is difficult for police to make definitive statements regarding an ongoing investigation. I am sure you followed the events leading up to the trial and saw that a third suspect was not named until much later. The police report what was found at the scenes and in the interviews; however once the Justice Department begins to examine the evidence things may change. Once the defense attorneys begin their investigations and earn the trust of their clients, even more information may be revealed. So in the early stages making definitive comments could have been counter productive and could possibly have jeopardized the case. Basically the situation can remain fluid until the jury makes a decision.

Every homicide case brought to trial in the past two years have resulted in guilty verdicts in the VI. I say the last two years because I have only been on this job for less then a year and have only researched statistics for the last two years. Each trial has taken an average of one year to be heard in front of the jury. I find the VIPD to be very deliberative in making arrests, especially when it comes to murder cases. They generally do not make an arrest until they are certain that arrest will result in a conviction. In the case of Jamie, we are all satisfied that justice was served.

I do not mean to stir up any bad feelings among friends of the deceased, I only ask that the verdict be given at least half as much publicity as the events leading up to it.

Respectfully
Melody Rames

What did they say to the man from Chicago who was beaten to a pulp a couple of years ago? Or other crime victims? Don Calloway on August 10, 2006? http://www.caribbeannetnews.com/cgi-script/csArticles/articles/000030/003096.htm

One thing that became abundantly clear with the murder of Jamie Cockayne was that there were problems in paradise. What has transpired will make those of us stateside forevermore question the safety of an Island paradise that is technically in the United States. And that is the problem they have, unfortunately: it's not like the murder of Jamie Cockayne was an isolated issue.

ORIGINAL POST

A case that was followed on this website involved the murder of a 21 year old boy named Jamie Cockayne, who happened to be a first cousin of a friend of mine. Jamie had many family members along the Main Line and in Bucks County as well. Apparently, a decision has been reached in the court case...finally...

Jamie, way back when, was brutally murdered and left to die on a street on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Jamie was murdered within a few hundred feet of a police station, or mini police station. What followed was absolute outrage and a very slow process where Jamie's parents were ignored by public officials and by various media reports threatened.

Time dragged on and on and on. It shed an unplesant light on an island "paradise" under the jurisdiction of the United States Government. It shed an unpleasant light on a whole lot of problems in a prime tourist area. And that is the truth and was played out in multiple media outlets in the U.S. Virgin Islands and stateside. People called for boycotts until the murder was solved. After Natalee Holloway and that guy from I think Chicago who was beaten to a pulp while vacationing in the Virgin Islands.

Track Safety: Rails and Trails and... People.

What value is there on human life and safety when it comes to politics? (And these days, every move made everywhere seems about politics, right?)

So it makes me wonder why a former Lower Merion commissioner is SO determined to ram through part of the Schuylkill River West Trail (public meeting October 13th in Ardmore at the Township Building from 7 - 9 p.m.) when there are so many issues revolving around safety and rails? (Is it like eminent domain in Ardmore which he said would go through way back when?) People not just in Gladwyne have grave concerns about the part of the proposed river trail dubbed the "Noise Fume Pass" because part of this trail as it runs through Gladwyne will be sandwiched between the Schuylkill Expressway and very live Norfolk Southern Freight Train track lines. What is Mr. Davis's plan B in the event of an expressway accident that spills over? What if a car or truck throws a tire or some load they are hauling? What if that happens with a freight train? What if a freight train derails (it has happened on this line - do your history fact checking)? What about mud and land and rock slides? How do you get police and fire and EMTs there quickly if they were needed?

And more to the point if it is not safe to plant a garden in Merion next to the R5 according to Amtrak (refer to the spraying and killing of a 20 year old community garden this past summer), and there is a need for protections along the Septa Route 100 trolley, how can it be deemed safe for families to take walks with children and dogs, or ride bikes through a section of trail with highway on one side and train tracks on the other? Is it just me, or doen't this compute?

And what made me think about this today. A sorrowful plea from a man named Ben Breskman about his son Brian, who was killed on the Septa Route 100 line in May, 2007. In the efforts to provide full disclosure, a lawsuit on this was recently settled, but I don't think that suit was really as much about the money as other things...this wasn't a bad kid, and although just a freshman at Penn State, this kid had already begun to make his mark. Now his family is left with sorrow and memories. Check out what his dad has to say, and see photos of what he is talking about.

Rail safety is a big deal. Tracks should have fencing in certain areas, and a continuous river trail is not worth putting people at risk. A trail does not have to be 100% continuous to be a success - look at the one in Radnor Township - it has a beginning and an end and people love it just the way it is.

Off Campus Student Housing

In Lower Merion Township, student housing ordinance was amended earlier this year (2008), to in essence accomodate Bryn Mawr College near their campus. I think they were the only municipality to do any updates in 2008.

I've got the election season blues. I am pretty much tired of everything. Read all about it in my column for Main Line Life:

A Senior casts her vote for the Barnes

Here is the opening of an op-ed piece that appears in today's Main Line Life regarding the election of a new Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This election day is the first opportunity to let Tom Corbett know what we think about his support for the dismantling of the Barnes Foundation. Here is one woman's opinion on the matter:
