Is the Question Simply How Much Development is Enough?

Government approving a problematic or even a bad plan over a principle that is not necessarily applicable is not good government is it?

Developing to say a community has completed recent development is not necessarily good government is it?

Approving development plans without clear community consensus as a result of an inclusive and open planning and visioning process is not good government, is it?
We should welcome developers who encorage and believe in a true public process, and discourage cookie cutter one-size-fit-all development, shouldn't we?

It's o.k. to say what you DON'T want in your community, but non-productive if you don't tell people what you do want in your community and WHY.

This past weekend, SAC VP Scott Mahan represented the Save Ardmore Coalition at the Institute For Justice's Partners Retreat in Austin Texas. He was one of many speakers that told our stories about our experiences with eminent domain abuse. There were also other presenters that described their battles for freedom of speech, school choice and economic liberty.

Ardmore and Politics...Perfect Together

On Thursday, March 13th, 2008, I made a pilgrimage of sorts. I traveled from the Lower Merion Township side of Ardmore, past the “Montgomery County/Lower Merion Township/Village of Ardmore” sign, past many familiar streets, into the Delaware County Side of Ardmore.

I had received an invitation from my State Representative Daylin Leach to have the opportunity to see Michelle Obama in a relatively intimate setting, and perhaps even have the opportunity to meet her.

Ok, let’s get the questions out of the way right up front: No, I have not chosen my candidate for the office of President of The United States. Truth be told, I am somewhat ambivalent, lost is a sea of spin, buzz words, and rhetoric coming at me from all sides.

Am I searching for the candidate who will best meet my needs, answer my questions? You betcha’.

It's A SACabration! Save Ardmore Coalition To Receive Award From Prestigious Preservation Alliance For Greater Philadelphia!

Photograph of members of the Save Ardmore Coalition Winning Lower Merion HARB Award for Stewardship in 2007. On this occasion, SAC also received a special achievement award from State Senator Constance H. Williams. In 2007, Save Ardmore Coalition was also honored with the prestegious "David Award" from The Institute for Justice in Washington DC. 2008 brings the Save Ardmore Coalition accolades and recognition from The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia

We hate keeping secrets from all of you out there who support us here at the Save Ardmore Coalition. But now we can tell you that we are receiving an award that isn't merely a feather in our proverbial caps, it is a real testament to us as a group...and especially a testament to Scott Mahan, VP for doing the paperwork!

We are, as a group, proud and honored to announce we are a 2008 group recipient of a 2008 Preservation Achievement Award in the category of "Community Action Awards" from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia!

When a group like the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia honors us, it further cements our resolve that we must be doing something right! We are also honored to be in the company of our fellow 2008 award recipients.

Dear SAC,

It's great to see the good impact of your dedication to building a strong Ardmore community. Your good campaign sets a great example for everyone on how to be engaged citizens. Warmest thanks for the steadfast commitment (i.e., work) and congratulations to you.

Speaking of being engaged, here is a notice about the first ever fund-raising event for Friends of the Barnes Foundation Legal Defense Fund. Here are the details:

First Friday Main Line Poster Contest Spotlights Our Artists of Tomorrow!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fj6yC7x35ew/RxzfEw37CiI/AAAAAAAAAHA/NmcXYy4Zw5s/s400/TySoehngen_11th.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5124215748972710434" />Ty Shoehngen 11th

Here at First Friday Main Line, fostering the artists of tomorrow is something we take quite seriously. Just like we believe art appreciation starts young. That being said, we wanted to share with you part of our theme for November which is a total celebration of our young people in all of our local schools in our community: we are sponsoring a student poster art contest! Here's what we sent out to get the ball rolling:

First Friday Main Line POSTER CONTEST:
We would like to feature your student’s work for our 1st annual FFML poster contest.

The FFML poster contest is open to students in public and private elementary, middle and high schools with prizes for each age group.

Selected artwork will be exhibited in businesses throughout Ardmore, Haverford and Bryn during the month of November. To be juried, all work must be submitted to First Friday Main Line by October 15th, 2007 and will be posted on the First Friday Website, www.Firstfridaymainline.com so that the public can vote for the favorites in the elementary, middle and high school category.

Artwork Theme: Art in Unexpected Places.

Work May be in any media and should be basically two dimensional (reliefs are acceptable) and in a 9” x 12” format. Work cannot be too heavy to hang easily in a store window. Only one piece may be submitted per student and it must be labeled on the with the standard label attached.

Click here for poster art submissions received thus far.

Check out some more of what has been submitted:

Utility Company Follies: The Utility Summit Review

Last evening, Lower Merion Township in conjunction with State Senator Connie Williams held a public utility summit. All local State Representatives were there, a handful of commissioners, the Township Manager, and the PUC. It was a good evening, fairly well attended, although we will note that there should be a follow-up summit in September for those residents who were unable to attend. PECO,AQUA, and Verizon sent loads of people – I guess we are paying all those salaries in part through our rates? Everyone should watch the replay on Channel 7 (unless of course you have Verizon Fios, and in that case you will have to rent a DVD or video from the library)

Here is the SAC Report Card:

A+ -- Goes to State Senator Connie Williams, St. Reps Daylin Leach, Cathy Manderino, and Mike Gerber for being there and being citizen advocates

A+ -- Goes to Lower Merion Township Commissioners, Doug Cleland Township Manager, Pat Ryan Asst. Township Manager, LMPD Supt. Joe Daly, and Don Cannon Director of Public Works. They asked important questions, gave great feedback, and are a major catalyst for positive change. They listen to our utility company complaints and seem honestly frustrated by the same issues citizens are frustrated by.

C -- Goes to AQUA. Yes, they create hopscotch obstacle courses on our roads, but their personnel were not only friendly, but they gave us many direct phone numbers to call in case of a problem. They also seemed to interact best with the public, and actually seemed to care about our comments. They also tried the best to answer questions.

D --Goes to PECO. While Ralph Brown, their Government Affairs guy seemed to do his best to answer direct questions, it is apparent PECO doesn’t really have answers to consumer and governmental concerns. PECO has MANY service related issues, we heard a lot about that. Response time (emergency and non emergency), customer service, the inability to get a live person on the phone and even adequate response as to why they are in such sorry shape with regard to infrastructure were hot button topics. As consumers and customers, we deserve better. And that woman with the brown hair who said she had only been on the job a few months? She has a lot to learn, and we’ll leave it at that. PECO had the most suits and managers in the room.

F – Goes to Verizon. The main guy doing the talking to Verizon is what teenagers would have described as “bone head”. Was he in P.R. for Verizon? He answered every question like a tent revival minister “I feel your pain. I hear you.” Well Verizon, can you hear us now? Your dude didn’t seem the least bit interested in what many of us had to say, as a matter of fact many times while people were speaking and addressing him, he didn’t appear to be paying attention. Ignorance, flakiness, or A.D.D.? And Verizon, we weren’t all there last night and watching on TV to listen to dude pimp for Fios. We also learned from Commissioner Lance Rogers that those residents who have signed up for Fios don’t have government or public access TV and might not for up to a year. And we want them in our community WHY? The Verizon guy also was in danger of growing a Pinocchio, because we want to point out these items:

Spring Avenue Trash Clean-up

Yesterday, Saturday the 27th, I participated in a clean-up where I meet some wonderful folks who live on the Lower Merion side of Ardmore. The clean-up started at Spring and Simpson and we progressed up Spring to the communty center at Ardmore Avenue. It was great to see a clean community center, free from trash and debris. I also got to talk with the residents who participated and who live on all of these streets about their concerns; such as trash, and other more serious issues such as crime and drug dealing.

Awesome...we'll be there as we are a neighborhood that has suffered at the hands of utility companies over the past few years...inexplicable power outages, tunnels in the street...the works! This event would be perfect if they had included Amtrak....

Here's the press release someone sent us:

Save Ardmore Coalition Wins Prestigious National Award From Institute For Justice!

SAC ROCKS!

The Save Ardmore Coalition is the proud recipient of another award!!! And it is totally unexpected and blows us away! From the Institute for Justice! http://www.ij.org

Scott Mahan, Vice President of Save Ardmore Coalition, is down in Alexandria Virginia for the Institute for Justice's 2007 Conference. Here, we'll let him tell you all about it:

I am in Alexandria VA at the Institute For Justice's National Conference on Eminent Domain Abuse. It has been a great conference. SAC has been represented here for the past several years by Ken Haskin, Sharon Eckstein, Si Simons and Carla Zambelli. This year, they threw us a curve ball. After tonight's dinner, they presented us with the David Award! This is HUGE!

As you will read, the award is presented "For outstanding Courage and Principled Devotion in Protecitng Your Rights And the Rights of all Citizens Against the Abuse of Eminent Domain By the Goliaths of Government and Private Interests"

This award is only awarded in special circumstances. The last recipient was Suzette Kelo. You should all be proud. I love you all dearly and humblely accepted the award on behalf of all SACers. This award is FOR ALL OF US...... SAC ROCKS!!!

And one other thing on the SAC hit parade today? A favorite thing - PECO.

A RANT About Lower Merion Public Meetings Including the Ardmore RFP Meeting At 6 p.m. Tonight May 30th!

**Warning, warning! Danger Will Robinson! This is a SAC RANT...front page worthy even if it doesn't end up there...if our rants annoy you, DON'T read the post***

A few SAC members had a conversation this morning about this evening's Ardmore RFP meeting/public hearing:

Ardmore Transit Center Project Wednesday May 30 6:00 P.M.

So the meeting is in the boardroom, and it is crucially important for the public to interact with government so we don't end up with a crap project that looks like chain store Disneyland in Historic Ardmore. It is crucial for the business owners in Ardmore to be able to get to the darn meeting so they can see what the future holds for them and if they will be included or excluded, or disenfranchised for the lure of the shiny new penny?

It is disturbing to note they are designing Transit Oriented Development in our towns that are historically transit oriented to be transit oriented. But that is a topic for another day.

Back to the public meetings.

Tonight's starts at 6 p.m.. If you work, have a family, own your own business, 6 p.m. is a VERY DIFFICULT and extraordinarily INCONVENIENT time!

It takes THREE villages to showcase arts and culture in the region, and representatives of businesses and cultural arts organizations in the three towns of Ardmore, Haverford and Bryn Mawr started working together during the summer to create FIRST FRIDAY MAIN LINE: A Main Line ARTitude - This joint partnership shaped a new initiative with the intention of revitalizing our Main Line area, and creating a regional spotlight for all of the talented artists, musicians, and performers who spring from the Main Line.

When EMINENT DOMAIN Comes Up in a Bryn Mawr TRID Conversation, SAC Listens

We have had reports of the meeting in Bryn Maaaawaaa last evening. Apparently it was a civic association plus meeting over at the Bryn Mawr Community Center next to Ludington Library.

So in case you have been sleeping over TRID (Transit Revitilization Investment District) but we find it a Tricky Ridiculous Irksome Disaster, and is this just a developer's idea of manna for heaven forget about what is left of the Bryn Mawr residents and small businesses that were there first, here are some resources:

LowerMerionGreen.org

TRID News From Bryn Mawr: Is this another dumb plan for Lower Merion?

Is T.R.I.D. on the menu for Bryn Mawr? (and other intriguing rumors)

Preliminary TRID Boundary and Rationale

Bryn Mawr Master Plan

ACT 238 of 2004: TRID

www.landuselawinpa.com

Now we are sure as spittin' someone in local government might be having a conniption about us promoting anything on this, but kids....we've had phone calls and e-mails today....why?

Because two dirty words came up: EMINENT DOMAIN

SEPTA are perennially irresponsible regional transit authority has the ability NOW to use eminent domain if it wanted, you all know that, right?

Well....TRID has the potential, or shall we say, giving them MORE room to do so if they so chose...so if Lower Merion Township were to pledge to Bryn Mawr NOT to use eminent domain, it's great, but unless SEPTA makes a similar pledge, preferably in writing released to local government AND the media, well, that unfortunate door is open and no one can spin their way out of that.

Folks in Bryn Maaawwwaaa are concerned because they feel TRID is like a murky lake, you can't see the boundaries or the bottom. But hey, they aren't all wet are they if the actual TRID boundaries keep shifting like a shoreline after a hurricane, right?

Thank You All For Attending Our Community Forum in Ardmore!

Thank you to all who attended our community forum last evening with North Ardmore and ArdWood Civic Associations. It was a very productive, informative, and engaging conversation, and we look forward to more in the future.

We want to thank you, our audience, for attending. We had many familiar local faces in Lower Merion along with a whole bunch of new ones. We had guests from the Haverford Township side of Ardmore eager to join with us and make ALL of Ardmore the best it can possibly be.

We had quite a few guests from Radnor Township - members of the Save Ithan Coalition who are fighting to preserve the historic and environmental integrity of Radnorville and Ithan, now under the gun from development. We urged them to forgo the tactic of closed door meetings that we know some within their group are proponents of and active participants in because quite frankly, it will bite them in the ass. We learned that one of the developers up there has new plans but that still includes condos on stilts.

Radnor you have a choice to make: either you are going to end up with Peddlers Village on Conestoga or something that resembles Atlantic City. Both are inappropriate for the most historic part of Radnor Township. The folks (and they know who they are) who are playing Monte Hall with the Lone Ranger from the Planning Commission need to put their egos aside and get a reality check. And the newspapers need to cover this more. People are confused and in the dark and we feel sorry for them. Ok, now back to our regularly scheduled program:

Thank you to Commissioners Taylor, Gelber, and Dellheim for attending, and we're sorry that Vice President Phillips had a last minute, unavoidable conflict in scheduling- but we know she was there in spirit! We have to say that our Ardmore centric commissioners have been very supportive of the community at large.

Thank you to Township Manager Doug Cleland for attending this forum, it was simply terrific to have him in the audience because he adds a lot to these conversations. Those of you whom have never met the Township Manager should.

We can't thank enough, our panel of speakers. Mike Weilbacher, Executive Director of the Lower Merion Conservancy, Chris Leswing, Assistant Director of Lower Merion Township's Building & Planning Department and Jerry Francis, President of the Lower Merion Historical Society all were absolutely tremendous. To those of you who missed it, we also must thank our local public access, Channel 99 PATV - through the generosity of Irene McNeil, once again our forum was covered and filmed. Please support Channel 99 financially with any small bequest you can manage so they might continue to cover the community in which we live!

The Conversation Continues...Attend Our Crucial May 17th, 2007 Community Forum in Ardmore!

May 17th, 2007 Community Forum: The Conversation Continues...What can we be doing to protect our traditional neighborhoods while balancing development with preservation?

Ardmore ROCKS! Thanks Everyone for a Great Night!

Hi!!!! Here are some of the first post-event photos

Wow! It took us a day to recover from "Get Out Your Green" for Ardmore's Moira Shaughnessy, and we're still tired!

We are all blown away by the sheer generosity of folks and what a tremendous success this March 17th fundraiser was! Moira attended her party along with her family, and it did our hearts good to see her and her lovely family.

First, we'd like to thank Joe Rufo, owner of Brownies 23 East (www.brownies23east.com ), because without him, it wouldn't have happened! Joe, thank you, thank you, thank you! And Sam, Sam, SAC's Auction Man, we love ya' baby!

To the approximately 800 individuals who came out for this event during the course of the event, thank you!

To all of those who donated goods and services, thank YOU including Super Suppers (www.ssardmorepa.com),Carlinos (www.carlinosmarket.com ), Acme Markets (www.acmemarkets.com ), Cricket Catering (www.cricketcatering.com), Suburban Office (www.suburbaninc.com), WXPN (www.xpn.org).

Trudy The Dustpan Diva

You guys brought the house down with your talent!!!!!!!!!!!

To the Township of Lower Merion, www.lowermerion.org , you have absolutely no idea how happy we were to be able to get to Ardmore, let alone park...it was the worst ice accumulation anyone had seen. Also a big thanks to all those commissioners and township staff members who came out to celebrate Moira with us.

To our local and regional papers www.mainlinelife.com, www.mainlinetimes.com, www.philly.com - many thanks for all the fabulous promotion. And we can't wait to see what magic will happen courtesy of Irene McNeil and the tremendous Local 99 PATV (http://www.local99.tv/), because they were there filming and interviewing all night long!

For our photographer, Joanne Posse www.joannepossephotography.com , we owe a debt of gratitude for all those photos we will see shortly....You guys, Ardmore came together on Saturday like nothing anyone has seen - and we think this is hopefully a harbinger of things to come.

Please remember that the fundraising doesn't stop with this first event, and any additional "green" you can get out can be sent as follows:
