Tina Fey: Art Imitates Life (and Palin)

Love it or hate it?

Ok, did anyone see the Saturday Night Live skit? Of Tina Fey as Sarah Palin ?

Tina Fey was so funny I thought I would get hiccups I was laughing so hard! She has Srah Palin down even to the voice (which I must admit is super annoying).

Politically Inappropriate: It's Wannabe Season

Our event Friday September 5th was SO popular that a candidate for U.S. Congress assumed it was a political rally. This candidate was SO confused that he came with a legion of minions, some covered with stickers, all mostly scowling.

Yep, the wannabe politician named Bob Roggio who criticized a congressman for missing a couple of days of work when his mother died, came to Ardmore. Some still aren't really sure what dude looks like since this seems to be the first time he visited Lower Merion...of course he does it NOW because the election is so close, right?

What this candidate and his minions don't get is that if he had just come quietly as a private citizen to this event and casually checked it out, no one would have said a word. But this candidate and his minions tried to coopt and politick. The minions irritated our guests by trying to foist their candidate on people at a community celebration, as well as pestering people over and over to see if they were registered to vote. Yep, they tried to make an event about veterans and active duty soldiers, OUR community event, about THEM. Gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling doesn't it?
Camp Roggio Comes A Callin'

A Very Cool Blog That Will Also Be a PBS Special - About Lincoln Hwy/Lancaster Ave!

I love cool stuff like this. These guys are taking a new approach to Route 66 as it were...they are discovering the "Lincoln Highway". In our area, we know it as Lancaster Avenue. Check it out:

A Blog Along The Lincoln Highway: We’re making a TV program about one of America’s great roads, and we’re hoping you might enjoy reading about some of our behind-the-scenes work. I’m Rick Sebak, and I write most of the tales. Bob Lubomski is our camerman. And Glenn Syska has been traveling with us recently. He made the video blog entries in 2008. Back in 2007, Jarrett Buba did all that. Watch for A RIDE ALONG THE LINCOLN HIGHWAY on your local PBS station October 29, 2008 at 8 PM.

RIP Robert Hazard

Robert Hazard was a cool dude, who never forgot his days in Ardmore - he played way back when 23 East Cabaret, and just last April, played locally again at MilkBoy Coffee in Ardmore. He was playing with his new band, and as opposed to folks like Eric Bazilian and The Hooters who are too important to play locally it seems, Robert Hazard always came back.... well, he died yesterday....total bummer...

Posted on Thu, Aug. 7, 2008
Philly rock legend Robert Hazard dies at 59
By JOHN F. MORRISON
Philadelphia Daily News
morrisj@phillynews.com 215-854-5573

ONE DAY in the late '70s, Bill Eib visited Robert Hazard in his Center City apartment and Robert told him about a new song he had written.
"I wrote it in the shower in 20 minutes," Eib said Robert told him. "It's kind of silly. See what you think of it."

"I listened to it and he couldn't believe I really liked it. He had dashed it off so quickly."

Not only did Eib, who was Hazard's manager, like the song, it seems the whole world took to it when Cyndi Lauper recorded "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" in the early '80s.

For better or worse, Robert became identified with the song, considered a seminal pop anthem. It was recorded by numerous singers over the years and even showed up in films. Miley Cyrus, the teen singing sensation, has recorded it, which probably will set off a new wave of popularity for the 30-year-old vehicle.

Robert Hazard was big in the Philadelphia music scene before Cindy Lauper sang his song. He was almost single-handedly responsible for putting Philly on the rock-music map by riding the New Wave to heights of popularity that exploded all over the country.

He died Tuesday of complications of pancreatic cancer after surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 59 and was living in Old Forge, N.Y.

Inquirer's Sozanski Sticks Up for Barnes's Friends

In contrast to recent disappointments (a hasty retreat by Montco Commissioners Hoeffel and Matthews; getting the boot from Judge Ott), it does feel great to have Inquirer art critic Edward J. Sozanski stick up for Friends of the Barnes. The June 29th article explains the problem clearly and doesn’t shrink from calling the dismantling plan for the art collection by its names: “a cabal of interests that appear not to appreciate (the Barnes’) essential nature,” “the most audacious art heist in American history…,” “hijacking.”

Inquirer art critic speaks up about Barnes Friends

The Philadelphia Inquirer
June 29, 2008
Art: Friends of Barnes keep up the good fight
By Edward Sozanski, Contributing Art Critic

To paraphrase the eminent metaphysician L.P. Berra, an event has not concluded until all activity associated with that event has ceased. By that measure, the 20-year struggle for the body and soul of the Barnes Foundation might still have wobbly legs, even if, legally, la guerre appears to be fini.

Captain Matthews of The Montco Ship of Fools Sets Sail Without Barnes?

So about now we're asking ourselves if the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners (Matthews, Hoeffel, and Castor) are spending so much time bickering amongst themselves that they just did something not just a little bit wrong but a LOT wrong? As per Jeff Cobb at The Bulletin, Jim Matthews has basically welched on his promise to fight to save the Barnes? So is this a case of "Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Do No Job"?

So why are these three at the helm of Montgomery County? To shove through continuous river trails through Gladwyne, Lower Merion, and Montgomery County? Are they here to ensure certain Lower Merion figures can warm their fannies in Montgomery County Committee Chairs? Bicker amongst themselves? Show up at political functions? Kiss babies? What?

So WRITEMARSH, and Tony Phyrillas? We get it why you always have so much to say about them, okay? Because they just stabbed Lower Merion in the back on the Barnes, didn't they? They went back on their promise to keep the Barnes in Merion, Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County didn't they? It's up to the Attorney General now, eh? Rendell, Ott, Pew Trusts, Annenberg Foundation, Lenfest? They don't care about the art or about Lower Merion - they are all building a legacy to themselves, aren't they? They will go down in history as the people who stole the Barnes Collection, right? Unless of course the Attorney General steps up, right? Actually Nutter should say something. Where is Nutter on this? After all.... a LOT of Lower Merionites helped him get where he is, and a lot of those people want the Barnes to stay in Merion. We gave Nutter Manko, isn't that enough?

Montco To Drop Barnes Fight
By: Jeff Cobb, For The Bulletin

The Montgomery County Commissioners have decided to let the Barnes Foundation go.

The decision not to appeal a May 15 court decision was revealed yesterday afternoon by County Solicitor Carolyn T. Carluccio, who said she was informed by County Commissioner Chairman James R. Matthews.

Joe Rufo's New Restaurant in Ardmore Nearing Completion!

It's so very cool! Joe Rufo's new addition to the Ardmore Business Community Family is almost ready! J.R. Monaghan's is coming to life! We are so psyched Joe is so dedicated to the community of Ardmore! It's ironic, isn't it? As restaurants like Hu Nan spruce up, and new places like Auspicious open, and other like J.R. Momnaghan's gets set to open, one place looks more tired and a little grimy truth be told: Fellini....too bad because now THAT is a prime space and location...

Anyway, enough about that, check out Joe's new place! We're all so excited!

The Wire Comes to a Close....and The Finale To Air in Philly City Hall?

Anyone out there watch The Wire?

It is simply one of the best shows to ever air on TV. And so scary realistic it is almost amusing. The jabs it takes at politics and society are unmistakable and totally warranted.

The final episode ever airs in a few days. And in the final season, they have added the fictional newsroom of The Baltimore Sun to the mix. Why mention that? Because based upon what we read in the newspapers and on the web, can it be said the story is familiar?

Anyway, apparently Mayor Michael Nutter is having a Wire Finale party in City Hall. Are taxpayers paying for this? (Hope not) Think The Philadelphia Inquirer will have a Wire finale party too?

Daily News: Monday, March 3, 2008

Artistic Con Artist: Luc Sonnet

Well, who read about the Art of The Con in the Inquirer? Luc Sonnet (a/k/a Richard Carl Grossman) has a Main Line Connection - he applied to be a First Friday artist in 2006....and people remember him being super strange....but it was the first First Friday...everyone thought he was legitimate..turns out he wasn't...read the whole article which is pages and pages in length...

First Friday Main Line Poster Contest Spotlights Our Artists of Tomorrow!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fj6yC7x35ew/RxzfEw37CiI/AAAAAAAAAHA/NmcXYy4Zw5s/s400/TySoehngen_11th.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5124215748972710434" />Ty Shoehngen 11th

Here at First Friday Main Line, fostering the artists of tomorrow is something we take quite seriously. Just like we believe art appreciation starts young. That being said, we wanted to share with you part of our theme for November which is a total celebration of our young people in all of our local schools in our community: we are sponsoring a student poster art contest! Here's what we sent out to get the ball rolling:

First Friday Main Line POSTER CONTEST:
We would like to feature your student’s work for our 1st annual FFML poster contest.

The FFML poster contest is open to students in public and private elementary, middle and high schools with prizes for each age group.

Selected artwork will be exhibited in businesses throughout Ardmore, Haverford and Bryn during the month of November. To be juried, all work must be submitted to First Friday Main Line by October 15th, 2007 and will be posted on the First Friday Website, www.Firstfridaymainline.com so that the public can vote for the favorites in the elementary, middle and high school category.

Artwork Theme: Art in Unexpected Places.

Work May be in any media and should be basically two dimensional (reliefs are acceptable) and in a 9” x 12” format. Work cannot be too heavy to hang easily in a store window. Only one piece may be submitted per student and it must be labeled on the with the standard label attached.

Click here for poster art submissions received thus far.

Check out some more of what has been submitted:

Montco and Gerlach Declare "Game On" Over Barnes...Suburbia Gets Ready To Rumble!

Alright! Finally some teeth and no gums! It's definitely party time over saving the Barnes. Let's hope stern words truly lead to strong action. Hey Philadelphia! Go Steal Some Other Community's Art Collection! And anything that Vince Fumo and John Street have their grubby paws in should be suspect too, right??

Montco cries 'Gross' injustice
Referring to the uproar over Eakins, a coalition voiced its complaints about the Barnes move.
By Tom Infield
Inquirer Staff Writer

Philadelphia reacted with shock and outrage in November when word leaked out that just one famous painting - Thomas Eakins' The Gross Clinic - was going to be sold to out-of-towners.

It therefore ought to understand the pain that Montgomery County feels at the prospect of losing the Barnes Foundation, with its hundreds of Impressionist masterpieces valued in the billions of dollars.

So say the Montgomery County commissioners. So says Lower Merion Township. So says a suburban congressman, Republican Rep. Jim Gerlach.

They joined together yesterday in what amounted to a cry of frustration. They complained that neither the Barnes Foundation nor the city's art community took seriously the county's offer last month to put up $50 million in bonds to keep the Barnes on quiet Latchs Lane in Merion and stop its move to the busier, more visible Parkway in Philadelphia.
