Is Wayne the New Conshohocken?

MainLineThoughts's picture

A friend sent me a link to a spiffy new website called Around Main Line. Seems rather pretty, and one little thing caught my eye - an article about The Wooden Iron closing. But not really since it's partially owned or owned by the Flanigan's Boathouse family? Anyway, it's now going to become another "Boathouse".

So that makes downtown Wayne samey-same as downtown Conshohocken: Boathouse followed by Great American Pub.

While both are nice establishments what used to make Wayne such a preferred destination was the sheer dining diversity...not that Wayne is the only Main Line town to suffer from this...

Hitting It into the Rough

Many Main Liners were scratching their heads this weekend as the Wooden Iron quietly closed forever after seven very successful years as one of Wayne’s most formidable restaurants....But the good news is…in about a week the Iron will reopen as Flanigan’s Boathouse (www.flanboathouse.com). Some of the owners of the Iron are part of the Flanigan’s family so the speedy transition makes a lot of sense.

I am giving this two forks down, not because I mind The Boathouse, but because I think the Main Line is "Pubbed Out".

Of course, bearing that in mind, that is why I am giving the updated and enlarged DuJour in Haverford two forks up. Du Jour's creators get it. They get we love BYOBs, a good cocktail and a grown up atmosphere that is at the same time, family friendly.

And while we're talking pubs, the ones that get two forks up are McCloskey's on Cricket Avenue in Ardmore and JR Monaghan's on Lancaster Ave in Ardmore. If you are craving a pub burger and conviviality, those two places have it.

Pubs are great, and they have their place, but it just seems that Wayne used to be a frontrunner when it came to dining. Now they seem just trendy?
